Downloading and Exporting Your Resume

Export print-ready vector PDFs, DOCX, and Google Docs while preserving exact formatting.

Choosing the Right Format

Different hiring channels demand different file formats. Here is when to use each:

Format Recommendations:

  • PDF (.pdf) β€” Strongly Recommended (95% of cases): Locks in your fonts, line wraps, colors, and margins identically across all operating systems, smartphones, and ATS parsers.
  • DOCX (.docx) β€” Specialized Use: Ideal when applying to third-party recruitment agencies or executive search firms who explicitly request an editable Word document to redact your contact details before client submission.
  • Google Docs β€” Collaboration & Sharing: Great when you want to share a draft with a mentor, career coach, or peer for inline commenting and feedback.

Vector PDF Generation

Many cheap resume builders generate PDFs by taking a low-resolution screenshot (rasterization) of your webpage. When zoomed in or printed, the text appears blurry, file sizes balloon to 5MB+, and ATS parsers cannot extract a single letter.

True Vector Precision

Resume Template Free uses a client-side vector rendering pipeline. Every letter is encoded as a true typographic glyph with embedded font outlines. The result is an ultra-crisp PDF at 1200 DPI with file sizes under 150KB that ATS parsers read instantaneously.

Exporting to DOCX

To download an editable Microsoft Word document:

  • Click the dropdown arrow next to the 'Download PDF' button in the Builder header.
  • Select 'Download DOCX (.docx)'.
  • Our engine translates the template structure into native Word paragraph styles and tables.
  • Open in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, or Pages. All text and bullet points remain fully editable.

Opening in Google Docs

You can seamlessly transition your resume into the Google Drive ecosystem:

  • Download the .docx file from our builder.
  • Navigate to Google Drive (drive.google.com) and drag the downloaded .docx into your files.
  • Double-click the file and click 'Open with Google Docs'.
  • Google Docs preserves the layout, allowing you to collaborate with mentors using 'Suggesting' mode.

Print Settings & Margins

When printing your resume for in-person interviews or career fairs, incorrect browser print settings can cause misalignments. Use these exact parameters in your print dialog (Cmd+P on Mac, Ctrl+P on Windows):

Print Dialog Checklist:

  • Destination: Select your printer or 'Save as PDF'.
  • Paper Size: Set to 'A4' (International) or 'US Letter' (United States & Canada).
  • Margins: Set to 'None' or 'Minimum' (the template already manages its internal padding).
  • Scale: Set to '100%' or 'Default'. Do not choose 'Fit to Page' as it may compress text unevenly.
  • Background Graphics: Check the box 'Background Graphics' (CRITICAL: without this, accent color header bars and subtle badges will not print).

Troubleshooting Downloads

Solutions to common issues:

  • Issue: PDF shows default Times New Roman instead of my chosen Google Font. Solution: Make sure your internet connection is active during PDF generation so the font stylesheet can finish downloading.
  • Issue: Browser download blocked. Solution: Check your browser address bar for a pop-up blocker icon. Allow automatic downloads from our site.
  • Issue: Extra blank second page appears. Solution: Go back to the Builder, open Typography, and reduce body size or section margins by 1 step.
